The Austrian Imperial Navy Rum Novara was created in honor of the famous scientific expedition undertaken by the imperial navy on the Austrian frigate Novara in the years 1857, 1858, and 1859 under the command of Commodore B. von Wullerstorf-Urbayr.
This expedition, supported by the imperial government and under the direct patronage of His Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, was a pioneering journey around the world. It crossed three oceans - the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.
