IT'S FINE LIKE THIS - SERAFINO ZANI
With ‘Pass me the salt’, Serafino Zani continues the exploration of a contemporary use of steel as a material for everyday life, solid and durable yet elegantly refined. These products tell an unusual story of everyday items in the domestic landscape: the tray, the basket, the salad cutlery. The minimal language of Konstantin Grcic reinterprets steel through basic geometries, asymmetries, and sharp cuts, like metallic origami of extreme simplicity, capable of conveying the touch of the person who created them. The project ‘Pass me the salt’, born in 2007 thanks to the creative journey undertaken with designer Konstantin Grcic, encompasses a range of table and kitchen accessories characterized by innovative design without ever neglecting functionality – characteristic aspects of all Zani production – whose mix expresses a striking aesthetic power, devoid of superfluous decorative elements. The laser-cut baskets and trays, the Accento cutlery, the Certainly salad cutlery made of steel wire, and the Al Dente cooking tools are the objects created for the Project between 2007 and 2009, which were awarded the prestigious GOOD DESIGN Award 2010 by the Chicago Athenaeum - Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design & Urban Studies. An award, also given in 2011 to the pressure cooker Subito – also designed by Grcic and an integral part of the project – which represents an international recognition for the research and experimentation of an industrial reality like that of Serafino Zani, strongly committed to non-conceptual design. ‘Working with Serafino Zani gives me the opportunity to compare my way of working with Italian production in a field that I find very interesting and that I call the House-Factory. Serafino Zani is a contemporary, industrial company particularly attentive to design, but at the same time has a very strong connection to its territory and the craftsmanship. It uses industrial production means without forgetting the knowledge of the workforce. I believe there is great quality in trying to use industrial means, remembering that choosing a technology or a machine is like choosing a tool: both are not valuable in themselves, but because, through the project, they can convey the touch of the person who created them.’ Konstantin Grcic The meeting with Grcic, desired by Roberto Zani, confirms the growth path experienced by the brand, focused on an increasingly careful selection of its interlocutors and aimed at enhancing its identity as a made in Italy company on an international scale, based on a solid production history that today counts over 50 years of experience in the sector. Love for well-made things, attention to the relationship between beauty and functionality of the object, pursuit of innovative and original design: this is what is perceived in a product made in Italy by Serafino Zani. All the objects created for the ‘Pass me the Salt’ program synthesize innovative and essential design and an unmistakable aesthetic power combined with functionality that well represent the fundamental values of Serafino Zani's production and Grcic's style.
