Two dressed men, a woman who is not, and a scandal that had all of Paris rushing to the Salon des Refusés. The woman was looked at a lot. The overturned basket in the foreground, from which cherries, figs, and a brioche escape, on a blue dress abandoned in the grass, was looked at less. Manet had everything planned. We picked the cherries. Whole and pureed cherries, cooked in a copper cauldron, in small quantities, with cane sugar and a hint of grape juice that enhances the fruit. Then sage, a few leaves, no more, that comes behind the cherry with its scent of warm grass and underbrush. It is what gives the jam its cheeky, slightly green, not quite proper side. Like a picnic on the grass that we shouldn't have had, and that we would do again tomorrow. On the label, the painting that scandalized the Second Empire. In the jar, enough to understand it.
