According to some sources, the roots of the variety lead to the southeast of Eastern Europe. Theories suggesting that Welschriesling originates from France have not been confirmed. The name 'Welsch' was probably derived from Wallachia, an inland mountainous region in present-day Romania. Alternatively, its name is associated with northeastern Italy, where it is also cultivated under the name Riesling Italico.
Characteristics of the Variety
This late-ripening variety is widely cultivated in several regions from the Small Carpathians to Transylvania. It occupies almost 13% of the total area. In our country, it thrives on sunny alluvial hills of the Danube Lowland in the Southern Slovak Region. In the best locations with a longer sunny autumn and adequate humidity near river flows (Danube, Hron, Bodrog), the berries are covered by the noble mold Botrytis cinerea. The skin of Welschriesling is thin and flexible.
Characteristics of the Wine
In favorable years, the grapes achieve satisfactory sugar content with higher acidity, while in cooler and wetter periods, the varietal wines are green and harsh. During the short phenophase of ripening, a relatively rich varietal bouquet concentrates, supported by a spicy content of fruit acids. Young quality wines with the designation cabinet to late harvest exhibit notes of currants, later developing a core-nut character and, after aging, a pleasant acidity in their opulent taste. The aftertaste of the wine is characterized by a more pronounced note of fresh gooseberries. The longer growing season allows winemakers to produce naturally sweet wines from Welschriesling, including ice wines, which are characterized by a delicate aroma of honey and meadow flowers.
