History of Rum
Although sugarcane originally comes from Asia, it was brought to the Caribbean during Christopher Columbus's second voyage to the West Indies at the end of the 15th century.
The first written mention of rum production dates back to 1647 in Barbados. However, there is evidence that this spirit was produced as early as the beginning of the 17th century.
In its early days, rum was primarily intended for slaves working on plantations due to low production costs and the average quality of the time. More noble distillates, such as cognac or sherry, were reserved for colonizers and higher social classes.
In the 18th century, rum became a popular drink among sailors and pirates. With the development of distillation technologies and the improvement of production processes, it gradually gained popularity in Europe and North America as well.
Today, rum is among the most widespread spirits in the world. It is produced on five continents, including Latin America, Oceania, and the Middle East. However, the Caribbean remains its true home and the birthplace of the most famous rums.
History of Ron Espero
The inspiration for the Ron Espero brand came from the Spanish explorer, conqueror, and governor Vasco Núñez de Balboa, one of the most significant figures of the Age of Discovery.
In 1513, he became the first European to cross the Isthmus of Panama from the Atlantic to the Pacific and saw the Pacific Ocean, thus making an indelible mark in world history.
He arrived in the New World at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries and after several expeditions settled on the island of Hispaniola, in the territory of present-day Dominican Republic.
In 1510, he founded the settlement of Santa María la Antigua del Darién in present-day Panama. This settlement became the first permanent European settlement on the American mainland.
