The Story of Praděd

The history of the herbal liqueur Praděd dates back to 1877, when the liqueur manufacturer from Krnov, Siegfried Gessler, registered a trademark for a product named Jägerndorfer Altvater – Krnovský Praděd. This stomach liqueur, with a strictly secret recipe, achieved enormous success and became the flagship product of the family business. Customers at that time particularly appreciated its healing effects on the human body. Gessler's factory established branches throughout Austria-Hungary, and a prestigious customer was the imperial court in Vienna.

Before long, the company was exporting products overseas. The Gessler family owned the company until World War II, when it was Aryanized by the Nazis. After the war, it was then confiscated as German property. Production in Krnov continued until 1961, when it was relocated to the distillery in Dolany as part of the reorganization of the national enterprise SELIKO. Here, production continued until the collapse at the end of the 1990s.

The company RUDOLF JELÍNEK could not stand by and watch the demise of this traditional brand, and therefore, in 2005, it purchased the trademarks and recipes. The tradition from northern Moravia thus found its continuation in Vizovice, where the production of this traditional and unique product continues. The company R. JELÍNEK is thus involved in preserving Moravian traditions and typical Czech products.
