Of Secret, Silent Tears

Of secret, silent tears is the theme of reflection proposed to the poet Mario Luzi and has become the title of the collection of verses published by Numa in a small limited edition volume, hand-bound. The collection contains, among others, a poem dedicated by Luzi in the summer of 2004 to this project, which has remained unpublished until now. The volume includes five other previously published poems that Luzi gathered at the time to 'constitute a small group of verses, complete poems or suitable fragments with the Numa project' to which Roberto Zani invited him to participate. For the poetry collection Of Secret, Silent Tears, Ettore Sottsass designed a tear cup made of Murano glass, fragile and delicate like the poet's verses, which, along with the book, becomes part of the Limited Edition 2006 collections. Material: Mouth-blown Murano glass. Processing phases: The object is made up of 3 pieces: - The drinking vessel in Murano glass, mouth-blown in a wooden mold, cut with a diamond tip and trimmed hot. - The stem in milk glass, pulled hot to the dimensions determined by the design. - The foot in dark glass, worked by hand. The three pieces are worked separately in different areas. They are then joined hot, at the same temperature to prevent tensions that could compromise the object. On the stem, a fused glass application, colored in a chromatic gradient, is made to form spaced rings. When the temperature of the glass drops to a degree that allows the object to stand without risking deformation, the cup is placed in the oven for 8 hours, so that it can gradually reach room temperature, thus eliminating the possibility of thermal shock and nullifying internal tensions in the material. Each cup is finally signed and numbered by hand. N.B. The tear cup has been entirely handmade at the Gino Cenedese & Figlio furnace, Murano (VE).
