As with all our products, the selection of this one was primarily based on social dimensions and the supplier's approach, which follows the motto: "Trade can have a positive impact on people and the planet." The lack of local businesses and infrastructure in West Africa leads to farmers selling most of the raw nuts in shell (90%) to foreign buyers at a lower price. The raw material is then exported over 10,000 km from the collection point to India, Vietnam, or Brazil, where it is processed and subsequently travels back to the European market.
The priority of our supplier is to ensure that the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of cashew nuts is carried out by local farmers and businesses from the regions of Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Ghana, and Benin. This not only reduces the carbon footprint compared to the current supply chain but also increases the price of the raw material and creates jobs in rural areas of West Africa, where there is a high rate of poverty and unemployment.
Through our fair trade supply chain in Burkina Faso, the supplier is committed to supporting this rural community far from commercial routes and providing workers with a fair and respectful working environment.
