The xarda, commonly known as Galician mackerel or macarela, is a blue fish with nutritional values highly recommended for inclusion in a healthy diet; moreover, its low price makes this fish an attractive option for including in our meals. The mackerel or xarda is called blue fish due to the amount of fat it accumulates in its muscles, which is why it acquires that blue/green color on its exterior.
This Galician fish can be found throughout the year, at the fish market and food market. Although the best time for consumption is from April to July, as it is during these months that it accumulates more fat between its muscles, making its flesh much tastier and tender.
This fish is ideal for a wide variety of recipes, including grilled preparations, stews, or ceviche.
