The Basque Knife MINI HANDIA
The Basque knife MINI HANDIA is a unique folding knife, born in the Basque Country, at the crossroads of Basque and Japanese cultures. Designed as a simple and rustic tool knife, it fits into the tradition of everyday objects, those that would naturally find their place in the pocket of a Basque shepherd.
Through its design, the MINI HANDIA claims a strong Japanese inspiration. It notably takes the blade tip from the famous Higonokami, a classic of Japanese cutlery, recognized for the purity of its line and the effectiveness of its edge. This influence blends with the Basque spirit to give birth to a compact, authentic, and unadorned knife.
Origins and Spirit
The MINI HANDIA is designed as a functional, robust, and honest pocket knife. Its reduced size does not detract from its assertive character. It embodies a rustic vision of cutlery, where efficiency takes precedence over ornamentation, and where every choice of material has meaning. It is a knife designed to last, to develop a patina, and to live with its user.
Blade
The blade of the MINI HANDIA is made of raw carbon steel, an obvious choice for this model. This steel offers excellent cutting power and a precise edge, while recalling the appearance of blades from the past. Over time and with use, the blade evolves and naturally develops a patina, making each knife unique.
The mechanism is a traditional back lock, simple, reliable, and perfectly suited for a knife of this type.
Handle and Materials
The handle is dressed in scarified quince wood.
Scarified Quince Wood
The scarified quince reveals all the nobility of this dense and vibrant wood. The scarification, done by hand, brings out a subtle relief that enhances the natural grain and gives each piece a unique character. Over time and with use, the wood develops a harmonious patina, reinforcing its authenticity and its connection to Basque artisanal tradition.
Dimensions
The MINI HANDIA offers balanced proportions for everyday use:
- Total length: 16.5 cm
- Blade length: 7 cm
- Blade width: 2.5 cm
Manufacturing and Use
Handcrafted by the Basque cutlery TALAIA, the MINI HANDIA reflects a craftsmanship that respects traditions, combined with inspiration from elsewhere. It is a characterful pocket knife, as pleasant to use as it is to behold.
Maintenance
- Dishwasher absolutely prohibited
- Wipe the blade well after each use
The Basque knife MINI HANDIA is thus a meeting between the Basque Country and Japan, a modest knife in size, but rich in spirit, efficiency, and authenticity.
