The Shepherd's Knife – NAFARROA
The Basque shepherd's knife, called Nafarroa, is an iconic folding Basque knife from the province of Lower Navarre, particularly in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. It holds an essential place in traditional Basque cutlery.
First of all, the NAFARROA shepherd's knife is the artisanal and typical Basque knife of the Basque Country. Its name comes from the province of Navarre (Nafarroa in Basque), the historical and cultural heart of this region.
Origins and Uses
Historically, Basque shepherds used this versatile pocket knife for various rural tasks: cutting bread, cheese, tending to sheep, or working with wood. The Basque shepherd's knife was an indispensable companion in pastoral daily life.
Features
- Blade: Made of stainless steel or carbon steel, the 9 cm long blade has a slight curvature resembling a sage leaf. This classic shape optimizes cutting performance.
- Handle: Traditionally made of scarified quince wood. Measuring 11 cm in length, it often features traditional Basque patterns. A forced notch ensures the safety of this folding Basque knife.
Scarified Quince Wood
The scarified quince reveals the nobility of this dense and vibrant wood. The scarification, done by hand, creates a subtle relief that enhances the natural grain and gives each piece a unique character. Over time and with use, the wood develops a harmonious patina, reinforcing its authenticity and connection to Basque artisanal tradition.
Manufacturing and Cultural Value
The Basque cutlery TALAIA perpetuates the manual crafting of these knives. Each piece is unique, a guarantee of quality and local craftsmanship. Thus, more than just a tool, the Basque shepherd's knife embodies a living tradition and a strong cultural identity.
Modern Use
Today, this pocket knife is valued both for its utility and its heritage value. Some buy it as a souvenir or collectible item, while others use it for outdoor activities or cooking. It appeals to enthusiasts of Basque cutlery, fine craftsmanship, and regional traditions.
Consequently, the Nafarroa remains a practical folding Basque knife rich in history, appreciated for its authenticity, sturdiness, and understated elegance.
