In creating the Pelicon the Leaking Barrel series, we set ourselves a challenging task. We searched for knowledge and barrels around the world to provide you with the most luxurious beer drinking experience. Unique and complex beers were created, aged for twelve months in distillate barrels. So take your time, relax, and don't rush while tasting. This series currently offers eight exceptionally strong brews, among which we proudly present the beer with the highest alcohol content to date — a whopping 14.5%. We took our first steps in the field of aged beers at the end of 2017 when the first aged Pelicon beer in the Time series was created. After eight years of work and dedication, perseverance has paid off. In Athens in 2023 and in the USA in 2025, we were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals for various brews from this series. What does the Pelicon the Leaking Barrel beer collection contain: - Coconut Pirate Stout 2022, Alc.: 13.6% Vol., 330 ml, aged for one year in various rum barrels from the Caribbean. A dark beer with a small beige foam cap and a hint of coconut. - Peated Scotch Ale 2022, Alc.: 14.5% Vol., 330 ml, aged for one year in various types of rum and bourbon barrels. A dark red, almost black beer with a small foam cap and a slight amount of smoked malt. - Bourbon Stout 2022, Alc.: 14.3% Vol., 330 ml, aged for one year in various types of bourbon barrels. A dark beer with a small beige foam cap. On the palate, you will find a classic palette of bitter chocolate, whiskey, wood, and vanilla. - Tasting glass with the Pelicon the Leaking Barrel logo. - Beer coaster. What does it mean for beers to be aged? In Slovenia, we had for several years the oldest closed beer in the world from the Stare brewery in Mengš. According to recent discoveries, these are bottles of the oldest beer in continental Europe. Stare's beer may not have been brewed to last over a hundred years, but many have. Some of them are still available and consumed. Among them, perhaps the most notorious is the Ratcliff ale from 1869, which lucky select few say is not only still good but 'magnificent'. When aging, the selection of beer style pays off the most. While regular beer is ready to drink in about a month, there are several that are specifically intended for aging. Some even have this emphasized in their name, such as Stock Ale or Bier de Garde. In recent years, modern brewers have been rediscovering the technology of beer aging. Besides classic lagering, the most popular aging of beer is in wooden barrels. Used barrels are more interesting than new ones, primarily because of the liquid that previously waited in that barrel. This plays an important role in what the final taste of the beer will be after aging. Generally, wine barrels are more suitable for fresher beers, while distillate barrels are better for pure, stronger beers. But there are really no rules. Before the invention of stainless steel, wooden containers were primarily used for fermenting, transporting, and serving. However, since it was difficult to clean the wooden pores, all beers in the past were more or less 'infected' with various cohabitants in the brewing equipment. Resourceful brewers made beer with them in mind. English Stock Ale always had a characteristic aroma of Brettanomyces yeast, and some brewers in Brussels still brew beers with a very low pH, making them quite sour but tasty. Today, brewers are more interested in the 'breathing' of wooden barrels. Barrels expand and contract with temperature fluctuations, sucking in and pushing out liquid. Thus, the liquid acquires the aroma of the wood, and the wood retains the aroma of the liquid. The same happens with beer, which over time absorbs part of the previous liquid that lay in the barrel. From this interaction, new, more interesting aromas and flavors can emerge with proper aging that otherwise would not exist. “The Minister of Health warns: Alcohol consumption can be harmful to health!”
