In 1794, Abram-Louis Perrenoud noted the recipe for Extrait d’Absinthe in his distillery diary and began producing the first absinthe elixir. At that time, it was a medicine in the true sense of the word. It was a tincture that was added to white wine and consumed for stomach ailments. The popularity of the wormwood miracle grew, as people enjoyed drinking it even when they were not in pain.
Daniel-Henri Dubied, a lace merchant with no experience in distillation, noticed the commercial potential. He bought the recipe from Perrenoud and employed his son Henri-Louis, who had learned the distilling craft from his father. In 1798, Dubied, together with his sons and Henri-Louis Perrenoud, began producing absinthe under the name Dubied Père et Fils.
The first commercially produced absinthe in the world.
We move to March 2018, when the absinthe world was shaken by the news of the discovery of the first preserved bottle of Dubied Père et Fils.
It comes from the very dawn of absinthe history. From a time when the world had not yet discovered Antarctica, when the Spanish sold Florida to the United States, when King Charles X ruled in France, Francis I in the Kingdom of Bohemia, and when there were still over 30 years until the birth of the famous drinkers Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh.
The bottle ended up in the absinthe museum in Môtiers, Switzerland, where it became the absinthe Mona Lisa.
But there were two bottles...
The second one was opened, and samples from it were offered to the most significant absinthe enthusiasts. Fate wanted that exactly 220 years after the first absinthe bottle in the world, this legendary spirit was tasted by a young progressive distiller from southern Moravia.
This is the result that emerged from his tasting.
