Fig Leaf Tea from Slovenian Istria
Fig Leaf Tea is a gentle herbal infusion with a recognizable Mediterranean character. Dried fig leaves in a cup develop a soft green aroma, a slightly sweet impression, and a pleasant scent reminiscent of a summer fig orchard.
Figs are native to the Istrian landscape, where they grow alongside vines, olive trees, herbs, and fruit trees. At Domačija Butul, we dry their leaves and package them without added aromas, sweeteners, or other additives.
What does it taste like?
The infusion is mild, herbal, and pleasantly rounded. It has no pronounced bitterness, making it suitable for slow sipping throughout the day. You can adjust the taste by steeping for a longer or shorter time.
How to prepare the tea
- For one cup, use about one to two teaspoons of dried fig leaves.
- Pour with 250 ml of hot water.
- Let it steep for about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Strain and serve on its own or with a slice of lemon or a teaspoon of honey.
For a milder taste, use fewer leaves or a shorter steeping time. For a more pronounced herbal character, you can let the infusion steep a little longer.
On its own or in a herbal blend
Fig leaf tea is a pleasant standalone beverage, but it also pairs well with bay leaves, olive leaves, lemon balm, lemon, and other Mediterranean herbs. In summer, you can chill it and serve it as an unsweetened herbal drink with ice.
